New Cemetery Revolving Fund Created to Support Local Maintenance

Key Points

  • Burial fees will now stay within the cemetery department rather than the general fund
  • The revolving fund is dedicated exclusively to cemetery maintenance
  • The move allows for more efficient and self-sustained groundskeeping

Town Meeting approved Article 17, creating a dedicated revolving fund for burial fees collected by the town. Glenn Pratt, Chair of the Cemetery Committee, explained that these fees previously flowed into the town’s general fund, making them unavailable for direct use by the Department of Public Works for cemetery upkeep. This money that we collect for burial fees will be a revolving fund... It'll be used exclusively for cemetery maintenance, Pratt told voters.

The change allows the cemetery department to become more self-sustaining by reinvesting its own revenue directly back into the grounds. Supporters of the move noted it would help ensure that Cohasset’s cemeteries are maintained with a dedicated source of funding that does not have to compete with other general fund priorities each year.

Motion: To create the cemetery revolving fund.
