Cohasset Adopts Net Zero Resolution to Reach 100% Emission Reduction by 2050
Key Points
- The non-binding resolution targets a 50% emissions cut by 2030
- Adoption allows Cohasset to apply for "Climate Leaders" state grants
- Greenhouse gas emissions in town have increased by 3% over the last eight years
Under Article 22, Cohasset voters adopted a non-binding resolution to reach a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and 100% by 2050. Proponent Debbie Cook explained that the resolution is a critical step toward the town's participation in the state's Climate Leaders
program, which makes the town eligible for specialized grants. Our greenhouse gas emissions in Cohasset have increased in the last eight years by 3%,
Cook noted, urging the town to take formal action.
The resolution faced pushback from residents like Jay Whitney, who questioned the potential costs of reaching unrealistic green goals.
However, Select Board member Joe Larson and other supporters emphasized that the resolution itself is aspirational and carries no direct cost. It's aspirational... It costs you nothing. All you do is say I'd like to look into that,
Larson said. Proponents also highlighted that the solar array at the transfer station has already saved the town $1 million, proving the financial benefits of green initiatives.
Motion: To adopt the Net Zero resolution.
