Town Meeting Backs $5.8M Osgood School Roof Replacement via MSBA Partnership
Key Points
- $5.8M project to replace the leaking roof at Osgood Elementary.
- MSBA grant will reimburse the town for 32.47% (approx. $1.9M) of the costs.
- Funded via the School Stabilization Fund, requiring no new tax increase.
Voters approved Article 5, a major $5,858,522 project to replace the aging roof at the Joseph Osgood Elementary School. Superintendent Sarah Shannon informed the meeting that the roof has reached the end of its useful life and suffers from ongoing leaks. The project is part of the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Accelerated Repair Program, which will provide a 32.47% grant, covering approximately $1.9 million of the total cost.
The town's portion of the project, estimated at $3.9 million, will be funded through the voter-approved School Stabilization Fund over two fiscal years. Resident Jeremy Deona questioned if the cost could be offset by solar companies, to which Tanya Bodell of the Alternative Energy Committee responded that while the roof will be "solar-ready," the MSBA grant only applies to the roof structure itself. Construction is slated for the summer of 2026.
Motion: Move that the Town vote to appropriate $5,858,522 for the Joseph Osgood School roof replacement as distributed.
Vote: Passed Unanimously
