The Cohasset School Committee meeting on Wednesday, October 22, was a showcase of both current student achievement and future district strategy, highlighted by an inspiring presentation from students and a series of key votes on school improvement plans, election day scheduling, and a town-wide solar energy initiative. The evening began with students and staff from the middle and high school presenting their award-winning work from the DESI Civics Project Showcase. Projects ranged from an analysis of how road salt impacts marine ecosystems to studies on community diversity and composting. Senior Ollie Henry, who served as a student leader at the state event, described his role as focusing on "why civics is important and encouraging other students to be focused in civics." Chair Jennifer Lesky praised the students and their teachers, stating, "I think it really reflects an authentic learning experience where what students are doing can have an impact on their communities."

Following the presentation, principals from all four schools presented their School Improvement Plans, which shared common themes of fostering joy and wellness, refining multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), and providing authentic, project-based learning. The plans sparked supportive comments from the committee, with member Jacob Squatrito noting, "I just wanted to comment that I really have appreciated this like emphasis on play that I feel like come out over the past few years." At the high school level, a new priority to help students redefine success beyond traditional metrics of grades and college acceptance rates was discussed. Secretary Lance Dial addressed the challenge, observing, "It seems to me that there's a tension between that and maybe the traditional view of the school is to prepare for college...our students are kind of forced into this game." After the presentations, the committee voted to endorse the plans. Motion Made by Mr. MacLellan to approve all school improvement plans as presented. Motion Passed 5-0.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a debate over a request from the town to use the Deer Hill School gymnasium as a polling location for the November 3, 2026, state election. The move would require shifting a professional development day from its traditional spot on the Friday before a long weekend to a Tuesday, a change that drew considerable negative feedback from the community. Vice Chair Craig MacLellan voiced his concern, stating, "I think it's an overly narrow viewpoint to say that the senior restriction [at Willcutt Commons] prevents us from use having elections there...this is disruptive, I believe, to our...at least our parents." While acknowledging the disruption, the committee ultimately voted to accommodate the town's request, with members planning to engage town officials on finding a more sustainable long-term solution. Motion Made by Mr. MacLellan that we accept the state election for November 3rd, 2026 with the and adjust the calendar accordingly. Motion Passed 3-1-1.

In other business, Superintendent Sarah Shannon announced the forthcoming retirement of a key district leader. "Mrs. Susan Owen our director of finance and operations has submitted her intent to retire from the district as of June 30th," Shannon said, adding, "we will miss her terribly when that time comes." A search for a replacement will begin immediately. Later, Tanya Bodell, Chair of the Alternative Energy Committee, presented a proposal for a special town meeting warrant article that would grant permission to explore leasing school property for solar panel installations. Bodell explained the financial and environmental benefits, noting, "We take a very pragmatic approach to that which is you can't have one without the other especially in this town and luckily for us there have been federal and state incentives that have allowed us to move forward and have savings." Member Corey Evans spoke in favor of the idea, saying, "it feels like we're really unique in having children that...are free to develop in in a happy structure," connecting the district's positive environment to forward-thinking initiatives. The committee gave the initiative its full backing. Motion Made by Mr. Dial that we recommend article 11 for the [warrant]. Motion Passed 5-0. The meeting was adjourned at 9:36 p.m.
