The Cohasset Paul Pratt Memorial Library Board of Trustees convened for its first meeting of the new year on Jan. 14, 2026, tackling new operating hours, a town-wide budget crunch, and unexpected costs for the ongoing outdoor pavilion project. Library Director Bronwyn Nelson began her report by announcing that new, data-driven library hours will begin on Feb. 2. The changes, which include earlier opening times and adjustments to evening and weekend hours, are designed to better match patron usage. “Most of the patrons are very happy with the earlier opening,” Nelson noted, while acknowledging the challenge of earlier closing times for some. “We can't be everything for everyone… it's unsustainable to be open too many hours.”

The board began its work by approving minutes from its previous two meetings. A motion to approve the November 2025 minutes passed 3-0. Shortly after, a motion to approve the December 2025 minutes also passed 3-0.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a tense but collaborative discussion about the town's request for all departments to trim their budgets by 5% due to a shortfall in free cash. Director Nelson presented a revised budget that, while still an increase over the previous year, made concessions by reducing the education reimbursement fund and asking for a smaller increase to the materials budget. The situation drew pointed remarks from the board. "Our issues are with the town and how it is unable to manage the other departments and then it is taking a simple approach which is everybody gets cut five percent," stated Chair Catherine Harvey. Another trustee was firm on the need for funding, stating, "until the town is paying our full materials budget, we're underfunded. That's just full stop." The discussion was momentarily complicated by outdated spreadsheets, prompting one trustee to ask for clarity: "it would be awesome if I actually had the real numbers. That's all I'm asking." Another trustee pointed out the library's recent fiscal prudence, noting, "I mean we returned money to the town last year."

Director Nelson also updated the board on several community-focused initiatives. The library is reviving a mental health working group in collaboration with other town entities, the "Tiny Art Show" has proven immensely popular with 400 canvases already distributed, and special children's programming over the long Christmas break was a major success. Progress continues on the outdoor art project, with a trustee offering suggestions to the artist for Cohasset-specific designs like "The clipper ship." On the outdoor pavilion construction, Nelson delivered mixed news: work is progressing, but an unforeseen issue with the grade for the new stairs requires a retaining wall, adding an unexpected $15,000 to the cost, a development one trustee met with a simple, "Bummer."

The trustees concluded their business by approving the month's bills. After a brief discussion on a new, more cost-effective book leasing vendor and the purchase of a desk for a new hire, the board voted on the warrant. A motion to approve the December 2025 warrant passed 3-0. Before closing, Director Nelson thanked the board for approving the library's closure the day after Christmas, a move that she noted prompted the town to give all municipal employees the day off. Following this, a motion to adjourn was approved 3-0, and the meeting concluded.
